The Federal Government has begun a series of reforms aimed at improving Nigeria’s electricity distribution sector, beginning with a trial overhaul of two electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) that have been underperforming.
According to a statement from Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, this initiative is a result of a thorough review of the systemic issues that have hindered the distribution companies, encompassing problems in governance, infrastructure deficiencies, and operational inefficiencies.
A meeting has already taken place with the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA), where a roadmap entitled ‘Revamping of the Distribution Sector in Nigeria’ was presented.
The pilot program of this reform is scheduled to launch between May and August of this year. The plan involves targeting one distribution company in the northern part of the country and another in the south.
This will serve as a practical example for operational improvements, incorporating internal restructuring, external expert assistance, and federal supervision, with the goal of swiftly enhancing the quality of service delivery.
