President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has confirmed that the new tax laws will take full effect on 1 January 2026, following the earlier introduction of certain provisions on 26 June 2025.
The President described the reforms as a historic opportunity to create a fair, competitive, and resilient fiscal system in Nigeria. He clarified that the changes are not intended to increase taxes but to streamline government processes, promote consistency, and uphold dignity while strengthening the social contract.
Highlighting the importance of collaboration, President Tinubu called on all stakeholders to actively support the implementation phase, which is now underway.
In response to public discussions about potential modifications to some recently enacted tax provisions, the President stated that no significant concerns have been identified that would warrant halting the reform process. He stressed that trust is earned over time through careful and deliberate decision-making rather than reactive measures.
President Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to due process and promised to work closely with the National Assembly to address any issues promptly. He assured Nigerians that the government remains focused on building a tax framework that encourages prosperity and shared responsibility.
