President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday officially sworn in General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd) as Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Gen. Musa, the former Chief of Defence Staff, takes over following the resignation of Mohammed Badaru Abubakar earlier this week. His appointment was swiftly confirmed by the Senate.
Born in Sokoto in 1967, Musa joined the Nigerian Army as a Second Lieutenant in 1991. He rose through the ranks to become Chief of Defence Staff in 2023 and retired in October 2025 after improving coordination among the nation’s security services.
The new Defence Minister is expected to immediately take charge of operations as the Tinubu administration seeks to consolidate recent security gains and advance reforms for national stability.

The ceremony was attended by top officials, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, Minister of Information Mohammed Idris, and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu. Others present included Mrs. Lilian Oghogho Musa, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, and retired Justice Kumai Bayang Akaahs.
