Senate Sets Up Committee to Organise National Security Summit

In a decisive move aimed at tackling Nigeria’s worsening security challenges, the Senate has constituted a high-level committee to organise a National Security Summit.

Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, was named Chairman of the committee, with Senator Yahaya Abdullahi appointed as Deputy Chairman. The committee is expected to draw up plans for a national dialogue involving security experts, policymakers, and key stakeholders to proffer lasting solutions to the country’s insecurity.

The committee’s membership cuts across various regions and party lines, reflecting the bipartisan urgency of the issue. Members include Senators Ireti Kingibe, Idiat Oluranti, Mpigi Barinada, and Babangida Hussaini.

Others are Senators Jimoh Ibrahim, Osita Ngwu, Mohammed Tahir Monguno, Titus Zam, Isa Jibrin, Ahmad Lawan, Abdulaziz Yaradua, and Gbenga Daniel.

Also appointed to the committee are Senators Austin Akobundu, Buba Shehu Umar, Abdulhamid Malam Madori, Emmanuel Udende, Adams Oshiomhole, and Saliu Afolabi.

The Senate has given the committee a two-week timeline to report back with a detailed framework for the summit, which is anticipated to be a major step toward rethinking and reshaping Nigeria’s security architecture.

This development comes amid growing concerns over the country’s fragile security situation, including rising incidents of terrorism, banditry, and communal violence.
