TINUBU APPOINTS ODUSOTE AS FIRST FEMALE NIGERIAN LAW SCHOOL DG

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has made history in Nigeria’s legal education sector with the appointment of Dr Olugbemisola Titilayo Odusote as the Director-General of the Nigerian Law School.

Dr Odusote will become the first woman to head the institution since its establishment in 1962. Her four-year tenure will commence on January 10, 2026.

She currently serves as the Deputy Director-General and Head of the Lagos Campus and will succeed Professor Isa Hayatu Chiroma, whose eight-year tenure ends on January 9, 2026. President Tinubu described the appointment as “a significant milestone in promoting excellence and inclusivity in Nigeria’s legal education system.”

A renowned legal scholar, Dr Odusote obtained her LL.B and LL.M degrees from Obafemi Awolowo University, specialising in company and commercial law. She later earned a PhD in Law from the University of Surrey, United Kingdom, with a focus on public law and the administration of justice.

Since joining the Nigerian Law School in 2001 as a lecturer, she has held several strategic positions, including Head of the Academic Department, Director of Academics, and Head of Campus. She was also a visiting scholar at Nottingham Trent University, UK, and has published extensively in local and international legal journals.

Dr Odusote has contributed to numerous legal education conferences and served on committees of the Council of Legal Education and the Nigerian Bar Association. As Director-General, she will provide academic and administrative leadership across all campuses and serve as the principal liaison between the Law School, the Council of Legal Education, the Body of Benchers, and the Nigerian Bar Association.

The appointment has been widely hailed as a landmark decision that recognises merit and expertise while advancing gender representation in Nigeria’s top legal institutions.
