Tinubu, Gowon, Other West African Leaders Storm Lagos for ECOWAS at 50

LAGOS — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday played host to several West African leaders in Lagos as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) marked its golden jubilee.

The event, held in Nigeria’s commercial capital, brought together top regional leaders, including President Joseph Nyuma Boakai of Liberia; President Jean-Lucien Savi de Tové of Togo; President Umaro Sissoco Embaló of Guinea-Bissau; and Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (retd.), one of the founding fathers of the regional bloc.

Also present was the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, alongside other dignitaries and member-state representatives.

Speaking at the gathering, President Tinubu, who currently serves as ECOWAS Chairman, reaffirmed the bloc’s commitment to regional integration, security, and sustainable development. He lauded the founding visionaries of the organisation, noting that their legacy continues to shape West Africa’s collective progress.

The golden jubilee celebration featured keynote addresses, cultural displays, and strategic discussions aimed at repositioning ECOWAS to meet the evolving challenges of the sub-region.

Formed in 1975, ECOWAS has grown to become a vital platform for regional cooperation, championing economic development, democracy, and peace among its 15 member states.
