President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will on Tuesday leave Abuja for Lagos as part of activities to mark the 50th anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The golden jubilee celebration of the regional bloc, which began last month in Accra, Ghana, will continue in Lagos with a symbolic reenactment of the 1975 ECOWAS declaration at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Victoria Island.
As Chairman of ECOWAS, Tinubu is expected to address dignitaries at a high-level event scheduled for Eko Hotels and Suites, where he will speak on the achievements and future of the regional organisation.
The Chairman of the NIIA and former Minister of External Affairs, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, is expected to give a historical review of ECOWAS’ 50-year journey. A panel session will follow to dissect the challenges and prospects of the bloc.
Also lined up for the celebration is Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (retd), the only surviving signatory to the 1975 founding declaration. Gowon is expected to participate in all ceremonies and deliver a goodwill message.
President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr Omar Touray, will deliver the welcome address.
Meanwhile, President Tinubu will use the opportunity of his Lagos visit to commission several legacy projects on Saturday, May 31. Among them are Section I of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the Lekki Deep Sea Port Tax Credit Concrete Road, and the flag-off of Section II of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and the 7th Axial Road.
He will also virtually commission road infrastructure in the North, including the Kano-Kanwar-Danja-Hadejiya Section II Road, Yakasai-Zalli Road, and flag off the Kano Northern Bypass, Zaria-Hunkuyi-Dabai Section I, Dabai-Kafur-Malumfashi Road, and the Malumfashi-Dayi-Yashe-Gidan Mutum Daya Section III.
President Tinubu is expected to observe the Eid-el-Kabir prayers at the State House Mosque, Dodan Barracks, before returning to Abuja.
