UK’s Youngest Mayor is a Nigerian-British Princess, Opeyemi Bright

In a history-making moment that underscores the rising influence of Nigerians in the diaspora, 29-year-old Nigerian-British Princess Opeyemi Bright has been sworn in as the youngest Mayor in the United Kingdom.

The inauguration, which took place last Friday, ushered in a fresh chapter not only in British local governance but also for the Nigerian community abroad. Princess Bright now wears the ceremonial robe as the First Citizen of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham.

Born in the UK to Nigerian parents, Princess Bright’s rise to the mayoralty is both personal triumph and symbolic milestone. Her roots run deep in civic leadership—she is the daughter of Dr. Councillor Afolasade Bright, who once served as the Civic Mayor of Hackney between 2006 and 2007.

Addressing guests during her inauguration, the new Mayor said, “This is nothing short of God’s grace. I’m proud to serve my borough, and as a proud Nigerian, I will represent my heritage with humility and excellence. May this journey inspire others to lead, serve, and rise.”

For many observers, Princess Bright’s ascent reflects a shifting tide—where diverse heritage and youthful energy are reshaping the future of leadership in Britain.
