UK’s Youngest Nigerian-Born Mayor Hosts Dabiri-Erewa, Seeks Stronger Diaspora Ties

The youngest serving mayor in the United Kingdom, Princess Opeyemi Bright, has pledged to deepen connections between the Nigerian diaspora and their homeland during a courtesy visit by Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM).

The meeting, which took place in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, was described as symbolic of the growing leadership footprint of Nigerians abroad. Bright, a British-Nigerian who now serves as Mayor of Barking and Dagenham, received the NiDCOM delegation at her residence on Tuesday, June 25.

Dabiri-Erewa, according to a press statement signed by NiDCOM’s Director of Media and Public Relations, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, lauded Bright’s achievements and described her as “a shining symbol of hope for the younger generation in the diaspora.”

“This is what we mean when we say the Nigerian diaspora is a force for good,” Dabiri-Erewa said. “Princess Bright’s story is one of hard work, resilience, and impact. She is proof that young Nigerians, when given the opportunity, can lead and inspire across borders.”

She added that NiDCOM is open to strategic partnerships that promote innovation, inclusion, and development among Nigerians living overseas.

Responding, Princess Bright expressed appreciation for the visit and described her leadership journey as deeply rooted in her mother’s commitment to grassroots activism. She affirmed her pride in her Nigerian heritage and vowed to keep creating opportunities for Nigerians in the UK.

“I am proud to be a British-Nigerian and even more proud to serve my community while carrying my heritage with honour,” she said.

The mayor also stressed the importance of encouraging young people to develop their talents, urging collaboration that bridges the gap between Nigeria and the UK.

The visit highlights ongoing efforts by NiDCOM to engage and celebrate Nigerians excelling in the diaspora while exploring avenues for bilateral development and youth empowerment.
