Tragedy struck the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo, on Thursday as its Registrar, Mr. Ezekiel Imole Adeniran, was found dead in his residence under suspicious circumstances.
The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the incident as a case of assassination. Spokesperson for the Command, SP Olayinka Ayanlade, said the matter was reported at the Fanibi Police Division, and investigations are in full swing. “The man died in the early hours of Thursday. I can confirm to you that it’s a case of murder. We are working diligently to uncover the circumstances and apprehend those responsible,” he told Punch.
According to Ayanlade, intelligence reports suggest that two unidentified men emerged from a nearby bush and allegedly forced a substance into another individual’s mouth. While details surrounding the exact location and motive remain sketchy, police say efforts are ongoing to trace the culprits. “We appeal to members of the public with any useful information to come forward,” the command urged.
Meanwhile, the news of Adeniran’s death has plunged the UNIMED community into mourning. In a statement issued by the Head of Media and Protocol, Mr. Isaac Oluyi, the university described the development as “devastating.” “He was at work as recently as Monday, July 14. The cause of his death has not been officially confirmed,” the statement added.
Mr. Adeniran was appointed as the institution’s third substantive Registrar on January 6, 2025. His untimely demise on July 17, 2025, has left staff and students in shock.
