UNIMED Visitation Panel Submits Report to Gov Aiyedatiwa, Promises Swift Action on Reforms

Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has pledged a swift and purposeful implementation of key reforms following the submission of a comprehensive report by the Visitation Panel to the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo.

Receiving members of the panel in his Akure office on Monday, Aiyedatiwa praised the group’s diligence and objective approach, calling the exercise “a critical step towards institutional development and excellence.”

The governor, who acknowledged that he had not fully digested the two-volume document, said the scope and depth of its content were already commendable. He expressed particular satisfaction with the panel’s emphasis on institutional roles rather than individual actors.

“What makes me particularly pleased is the fact that you focused not on individuals, but on the positions they occupy. That is how institutions are built and sustained,” Aiyedatiwa noted. He maintained that enduring systems and processes must guide all university leadership structures.

He assured the panel that their efforts would not be in vain, promising that the recommendations would not gather dust. “Your labor and sacrifices will yield visible results. The real reward is in seeing your recommendations drive real change in our university system,” the governor affirmed.

Aiyedatiwa further stated that the goal remains to transform UNIMED into a world-class academic institution capable of competing globally and serving as a model among specialized universities.

“The whole idea is to build a better university; one that can compete globally, provide a top-tier learning environment, and become a model of excellence among specialized institutions,” he said.

The administration, he added, remains committed to revamping the education sector in Ondo State through informed, targeted policies and actions.

Earlier, Chairman of the panel, Professor Victor Olumekun, disclosed that the team had spent eight weeks carrying out an in-depth assessment of UNIMED’s operations. He said the exercise focused on evaluating systems and institutional frameworks, deliberately avoiding any judgment of personalities.

“Our focus was on processes and systems. We made a deliberate effort not to judge personalities, but rather to assess the positions and roles they occupy,” Olumekun said.

He emphasized the need for universities to adopt a culture of annual performance reviews as a means to drive accountability and maintain focus on institutional objectives.

Notable dignitaries present at the meeting included Deputy Governor Dr. Olayide Adelami, Secretary to the State Government Dr. Taiwo Fasoranti, Chief of Staff Prince Segun Omojuwa, and the Head of Service Mr. Bayo Philip.

The visitation panel’s report is expected to shape the next phase of reforms at UNIMED, reinforcing the state government’s broader vision for educational excellence.
