A cloud of sorrow hangs over the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) following the tragic killing of Godwin Akpakpan, a 300-level Computer Science student. The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the incident and said a full investigation is underway.
According to SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the command’s spokesperson, the case has been handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for what she described as a “discreet investigation.”
“The case has been transferred to SCID for discreet investigation, and a panel has been set up by the military with representatives of all service commanders in attendance,”
The fatal shooting, which reportedly occurred off campus, involved a yet-to-be-identified security operative. In response, UNIPORT’s management is demanding answers.
In an official statement signed by Dr. Sam Kpenu, spokesperson of the institution, the university expressed deep pain and outrage over the loss.
“The University is actively engaging with relevant security authorities to fully understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic event. We expect that a thorough investigation will be conducted and that appropriate actions will be taken in line with justice and the rule of law,” the statement read.
The university described the late Akpakpan as a “bonafide member of our academic community,” and called on students and staff to stay calm and allow the investigation to take its course.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues during this very difficult time,” the statement continued, reaffirming the institution’s commitment to the safety and welfare of its community.
“May the soul of our dearly departed student rest in perfect peace,” it concluded.
As the investigation deepens, many are watching to see if justice will be swiftly and transparently delivered in a case that has once again spotlighted the dangers students face even outside campus walls.
