VON Apologises Over False Report on Super Falcons’ WAFCON Victory

The Voice of Nigeria (VON) has tendered an unreserved apology to its audience and the general public over an erroneous publication regarding the outcome of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final between Nigeria and Morocco.

The agency had, on the night of Saturday, July 26, 2025, published a premature report on its website, falsely stating that the Super Falcons lost the final — a claim that has now been debunked as false.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Director-General of VON, Jibrin Baba Ndace, described the publication as “inaccurate and deeply unfortunate,” noting that it did not reflect the agency’s editorial standards.

Ndace clarified that the Super Falcons, contrary to the initial report, defeated host nation Morocco 3–2 in a stunning comeback to clinch their record-extending 10th WAFCON title.

He added that while initial findings suggest an internal lapse, the agency is also probing a possible security breach or hacking incident.

“Apart from our internal review, we are considering the likelihood of identity theft or sabotage. Investigations are ongoing,” Ndace said.

The VON boss also disclosed that the agency has commenced staff redeployments and internal reforms to improve editorial accuracy, enhance accountability, and strengthen its newsroom resilience.
