WORLD POLIO DAY: ROTARY CLUB EMPOWERS WOMEN WITH DISABILITIES IN ONDO STATE

The Rotary Club of Akure Diamond has donated mobility aids to the Ondo State Women with Physical Disabilities in Akure, Ondo State, in commemoration of the 2025 World Polio Day.

The donation, which included one wheelchair, two armpit crutches, and two elbow crutches, aimed to improve the quality of life of polio survivors and reaffirm Rotary International’s commitment to ending polio and supporting those affected by it.

At a ceremony held at Ago-Ireti, Akure North LGA, with an array of Rotarians in attendance, including the District Governor, Rotarian Batife Funkeakpo, lauded the Akure Diamond chapter for its dedication to humanitarian service and inclusive community development.

In his remarks, the Chartered President of the club, Rotarian (Dr.) Victor Koledoye, said the initiative was in line with Rotary’s vision of promoting inclusion and support for people with disabilities, especially women.

Addressing the gathering, the Polio Chair of the club, Rotarian (DC) Yemi Coker, explained polio and its causes, noting that although Nigeria had been certified polio-free, Rotary continued to invest in advocacy and community support to prevent a resurgence of the virus. He said the event was to celebrate polio survivors and reassure them that “we are one, we are together, and the society belongs to all of us.”

Rotarian Ayinla, who represented the State Polio Representative, commended the Akure Diamond chapter for sustaining the campaign against polio and urged other organizations to emulate the club’s efforts in supporting polio survivors.

Princess Folashade Akinwole, the Women Leader of the group, expressed appreciation to the Rotary Club for their kind gesture. She commended the club’s commitment to humanitarian service and its continued support for vulnerable groups in society.

Some of the beneficiaries, who could not hide their joy, expressed gratitude to the club for the life-changing support, describing it as a “gesture of hope and compassion.”

World Polio Day, observed every October 24, is dedicated to raising awareness about the fight to eradicate poliomyelitis and celebrating progress made toward a polio-free world.
