The Nigeria Police Council on Monday confirmed the appointment of Olatunji Rilwan Disu as the country’s new Inspector-General of Police, setting the stage for his official swearing-in by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday during the Federal Executive Council meeting.
The council’s session, held at the State House, was presided over by President Tinubu and attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, state governors, and retired DIG Hashimu Argungu, Chairman of the Police Service Commission, in line with constitutional provisions.
Also present were key federal officials, including Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, Minister of Police Affairs Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, and Head of Service Esther Didi Walson-Jack.
Disu succeeds former IGP Kayode Egbetokun, who recently resigned. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu praised Disu’s leadership of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) between 2015 and 2021, highlighting the unit’s achievements in crime control under his command.
Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State also commended the appointment, citing Disu’s distinguished service record, while FCT Minister Nyesom Wike lauded his professionalism. Disu had previously served in Rivers State as Assistant Commissioner of Police in the Criminal Investigation Department and in the anti-kidnapping unit, before later leading the FCT Police Command, where Wike noted his efficiency in addressing security challenges.
Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State further endorsed Disu’s appointment. Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos State, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1992 as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent and has risen through the ranks, earning qualifications in public administration, forensic investigation, criminology, security, legal psychology, and entrepreneurship.

Before his appointment as IGP, Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police overseeing the Special Protection Unit and the Force CID Annex in Lagos, holding several key operational, investigative, and strategic posts across the country.
