NCDC ALLAYS FEARS OVER NEW COVID-19 CASE IN NIGERIA

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has allayed public concerns following the confirmation of a new COVID-19 case in Cross River State, insisting there is no evidence of widespread transmission.

The NCDC said all identified contacts of the case are currently being traced and monitored in line with established public health protocols.

“All identified contacts are being followed up appropriately, and there is no evidence at this time of widespread transmission,” the NCDC said in a statement issued by its Director-General, Jide Idris.

This comes after the Cross River State Government confirmed a fresh COVID-19 case on Tuesday, years after the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared an end to the global public health emergency phase of the virus, which previously disrupted economies and claimed millions of lives worldwide.

The Cross River State Commissioner for Health, Henry Ayuk, disclosed that the index case, a Chinese national working in Akamkpa Local Government Area, arrived in Nigeria on March 17 and later developed symptoms consistent with the disease.

The NCDC, however, said the patient has since been isolated and is receiving appropriate care under standard treatment guidelines.

“The patient is in stable condition and responding to care,” Idris added.
