Court Orders VeryDarkMan to Pay N200,000 as Preliminary Objection is Dismissed

A Lagos High Court has dismissed the preliminary objection filed by controversial social media personality, Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, in the N1 billion defamation suits instituted against him by human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), and his son, entertainer and lawyer, Mr. Folarin Falana, also known as Falz.

Justice F.A. Azeez, who delivered ruling on the matter, ordered the defendant to pay a total cost of N200,000—N100,000 each to the senior and junior Falana—for filing what the court deemed an unmeritorious objection.

The court further directed Otse to promptly file his defence in the separate suits brought against him by the claimants.

Falana and Falz, in their respective suits, accused the social media influencer of character defamation arising from a video posted on his Instagram handle @verydarkblackman on September 24, 2024. The claimants are seeking N500 million each in damages, totaling N1 billion, as well as a public apology and a restraint from further defamatory publications.

Justice Azeez, in a brief ruling, struck out the defendant’s preliminary objection, paving the way for the substantive hearing of the suits.
