Salako Reaffirms Nigeria’s Commitment to Sustainable Healthcare Financing at 78th World Health Assembly

Nigeria’s Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, has restated the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment to reforming the health sector with a view to achieving sustainable healthcare financing.

Dr. Salako made this known while addressing a plenary session during the ongoing 78th World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland.

He noted that Nigeria’s strategy is rooted in the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which emphasizes increased domestic health funding, optimal resource utilization, and the delivery of cost-effective healthcare services.

“Our focus is on increasing domestic funding, optimizing expenditure, and promoting cost-effective healthcare delivery,” the minister said.

Central to this push, according to him, is the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative, which he described as a flagship programme that aligns with the country’s broader development goals. He emphasized that efforts to revitalize Nigeria’s primary healthcare system are critical steps in mobilizing internal resources for the health sector.

Dr. Salako also used the platform to appreciate the World Health Organization (WHO) for its continued confidence in Nigerian leadership within the global health ecosystem. This, he said, is exemplified by the recent appointment of Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, a distinguished Nigerian public health expert, as the new Executive Director of the WHO Health Emergencies Programme.

“We express appreciation to the WHO leadership for the trust placed in Nigeria’s health leadership on the global stage,” he said.

The World Health Assembly, convened annually by the WHO, serves as the highest decision-making body for global health policy, bringing together health ministers and stakeholders from across the world.
