NYSC DG Warns Corps Members Against Misconduct, Urges Respect for Cultural Diversity

The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Akinyemi Nafiu, has issued a stern warning to Corps Members to conduct themselves in accordance with the Oath of Allegiance sworn during their swearing-in ceremony.

Speaking during his official visits to the Abia State Orientation Camp in Umunna and the Akwa Ibom State Orientation Camp in Ikot-Itie, the NYSC boss emphasized that any act of misconduct during the service year would attract severe sanctions.

General Nafiu urged Corps Members to demonstrate discipline, integrity, and respect for the cultures and values of their host communities.

“No culture is superior to another. I encourage you all to learn, appreciate, and promote peaceful coexistence as you serve in communities outside your regions of origin,” he said.

He also charged the Corps Members to use their service year to dispel the misconceptions and prejudices they may have held about other geopolitical zones prior to their deployment.

In her address, the NYSC Abia State Coordinator, Mrs. Gladys Adama, presented a report to the Director General, stating that the camp had enjoyed a harmonious atmosphere with a total of 1,362 Corps Members—680 males and 682 females.

“The conduct of both Corps Members and Camp Officials has been orderly and peaceful,” she said.

In Akwa Ibom, the State Coordinator, Mr. Sam Pepple, disclosed that 1,605 Corps Members had been registered at the camp. He commended their swift adaptation to camp life and their commitment to upholding the ideals of the NYSC scheme.

Pepple also revealed that the Akwa Ibom State Government had approved the renovation of the camp facilities. He noted that the camp clinic was adequately staffed, with one resident doctor, 21 corps doctors, 10 pharmacists, 15 nurses, and two physiotherapists, among other health personnel.

The Director General’s visits come as part of efforts to monitor the welfare and readiness of Corps Members for national service.
