NAFDAC: Afrimedical’s 0.5ml Auto-Disable Syringe Receives WHO Prequalification

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has announced that the 0.5ml auto-disable syringe manufactured by Afrimedical Manufacturing and Supplies Ltd., based in Ogun State, has been prequalified by the World Health Organization (WHO).

This development marks a major milestone in Nigeria’s medical manufacturing industry, positioning the country as a key player in the global health supply chain.

NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, described the achievement as a “landmark success” during a press briefing on Friday. She noted that the WHO prequalification confirms that the syringe meets international standards of quality, safety, and performance.

“This is a landmark achievement for Nigeria’s medical manufacturing industry and a significant step towards strengthening our local capacity to produce high-quality medical devices,” she said.

Prof. Adeyeye explained that the 0.5ml auto-disable syringe, primarily used for immunization, underwent a rigorous assessment by WHO. The prequalification makes it eligible for procurement by United Nations agencies and international health organizations.

She emphasized that the approval was granted after a thorough evaluation of the syringe’s design, safety features, manufacturing process, and quality control systems in accordance with WHO’s stringent requirements.

“This milestone highlights the capacity of Nigerian manufacturers to meet global health standards and underscores the importance of continued investment and regulatory oversight in the local pharmaceutical and medical device industries,” the NAFDAC boss added.

The achievement is also seen as a boost to Nigeria’s drive for self-sufficiency in essential healthcare supplies, particularly in the areas of immunization and emergency response.

Afrimedical Manufacturing and Supplies Ltd. is one of Nigeria’s leading producers of auto-disable syringes and has played a pivotal role in supporting immunization efforts across the country.
