President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has confirmed the death of his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London after a long battle with illness.
In a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the loss and extended his condolences to the former First Lady, Mrs Aisha Buhari.
As part of the federal government’s protocol to honour the late leader, President Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the United Kingdom to accompany the remains of the former president back to Nigeria.
The late Buhari, a retired major general, served as Nigeria’s Head of State from January 1984 to August 1985, and later as a two-term civilian president from 2015 to 2023.
In honour of his legacy, President Tinubu has ordered that national flags be flown at half-mast across the country.
Further details are expected in the coming hours.
