ALLEGED DEPORTATION OF NIGERIANS IN GHANA, DABIRI-EREWA APPEALS FOR CALM

The Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has appealed for calm following reports of rising tension in Ghana over alleged calls by some citizens for Nigerians to be deported.

This follows a viral video circulating on social media in which some Ghanaians were seen protesting and demanding that Nigerian residents be sent back home over claims that their conduct does not align with Ghanaian values.

Describing the development as disturbing, Dabiri-Erewa condemned the sweeping generalization and criminal labeling of Nigerians in Ghana, warning that such sentiments could strain relations between both countries.

“It is unjust to brand all Nigerians as criminals because of the actions of a few,” she stated, stressing that most Nigerians living abroad are law-abiding and contributing positively to their host communities.

She reminded both countries of their historic ties and regional obligations under ECOWAS, calling for continued brotherhood and cooperation rather than division and hostility.

The NIDCOM boss also debunked claims making the rounds that properties belonging to Nigerians were being vandalized, noting that there was no credible evidence to support such allegations. She warned against spreading inciting content, saying it could fuel unnecessary tension.

Dabiri-Erewa assured that the Nigerian government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is actively engaging with Ghanaian authorities to address the issue diplomatically. She praised the efforts of the Nigerian and Ghanaian High Commissions, as well as the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, who is said to be in close contact with relevant stakeholders in Ghana.

She urged Nigerians in Ghana to remain calm, avoid confrontation, and allow diplomacy to take its course.

The Commission reiterated its commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of Nigerians abroad while working with host nations to promote peaceful coexistence.
