Lagos Govt Prioritises 10 SDGs to Accelerate Inclusive Development

In a strategic push toward sustainable urban transformation, the Lagos State Government has unveiled a focused agenda that prioritizes 10 out of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to drive inclusive growth, equity, and prosperity for all residents.

The disclosure was made by Dr. Oreoluwa Finnih, Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on SDGs, during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa, Ikeja.

According to her, the state has adopted a data-driven, locally relevant approach to the global goals by spotlighting 10 SDGs with the highest potential to catalyze progress across other development areas. These include:

  1. Goal 2 – Zero Hunger
  2. Goal 4 – Quality Education
  3. Goal 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation
  4. Goal 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy
  5. Goal 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth
  6. Goal 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
  7. Goal 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production
  8. Goal 13 – Climate Action
  9. Goal 16 – Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
  10. Goal 17 – Partnerships for the Goals

“This is not a deviation from the global SDG framework,” Dr. Finnih clarified. “It is a contextualized strategy to fast-track impact where Lagos has both the capacity and comparative advantage.”

She added that the state’s Voluntary Local Review (VLR) process guided this prioritization by highlighting key areas where investment, innovation, and institutional collaboration would yield broad, long-lasting benefits.

The government also reaffirmed its commitment to leveraging public-private partnerships, community-based participation, and results-based monitoring to achieve tangible outcomes.

Dr. Finnih emphasized that while the remaining seven SDGs are not excluded, they have been streamlined into existing policies to ensure holistic development without losing momentum or focus.

This renewed alignment positions Lagos as a leading sub-national actor in Nigeria’s sustainable development ecosystem and underscores its ambition to build a resilient, inclusive, and future-ready megacity.
