A video circulating online has stirred public outrage after capturing a police officer demanding either ₦5,000 or five litres of fuel from motorists who could not present proof of Electronic Central Motor Registry (ECMR) registration.
The footage, recorded along the Benin Bypass and shared on Sunday by X user Teniola (#Teeniiola), shows the officer confronting a group of travellers while insisting on the presentation of ECMR documents.
One of the travellers challenged the officer, arguing that enforcing the ECMR was unlawful.
This incident occurred despite a directive by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, who suspended ECMR enforcement in July 2024 following widespread public criticism.
Many Nigerians had accused the police of exploiting the ECMR requirement as a means for extortion.
In the video, the officer is heard saying, “You can make call now.”
When the traveller refused to call anyone and asked, “What do you want us to do?” the policeman demanded five litres of fuel, adding, “We’ll go and buy it, that’s 5k.”
“You want 5k from each of us abi?” the traveller questioned, as the officer also instructed another traveller to bring three litres of fuel.
