Tinubu Hails CGC Adeniyi on Election as Chair of World Customs Council

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, on his unanimous election as Chairperson of the Council of the World Customs Organisation (WCO).

Adeniyi, elected on Saturday in Brussels, Belgium, made history as the first Nigerian to lead the 73-year-old global body, which comprises 186 member countries. The Council serves as the highest decision-making organ of the WCO, responsible for shaping global customs standards and policies.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu described Adeniyi’s emergence as a landmark achievement, not just for the NCS but for the entire nation. The President also congratulated the Board, management, and staff of the NCS on the international recognition.

“The hoisting of the Nigerian flag at the WCO headquarters for the first time since its establishment in 1952 is a moment of immense pride. It underscores the transformative leadership of CGC Adeniyi, who has redefined customs administration in Nigeria within just two years,” the statement read in part.

President Tinubu commended the Customs boss for surpassing revenue targets, strengthening stakeholder engagement, modernising operations, and advancing digital processes to enhance efficiency.

While expressing confidence in Adeniyi’s capacity to lead the global customs body, the President urged him to exceed the expectations of the WCO Council and uphold Nigeria’s reputation on the international stage.

The President also extended gratitude to the WCO Secretary-General and other Council members for their unanimous support of Nigeria’s candidate, assuring that his administration would provide necessary support for Adeniyi’s leadership.

Adeniyi is expected to assume office officially on July 1, 2025, succeeding Edward Kieswetter, Commissioner of the South African Revenue Service.

The WCO Council, as the organisation’s supreme governing body, plays a pivotal role in promoting uniformity, innovation, and global best practices across customs administrations worldwide.
