Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, Dies at 91

The Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has passed on at the age of 91.

The revered monarch, who ascended the throne in 1960, joined his ancestors on Sunday, July 13, 2025, leaving behind a legacy defined by cultural revitalisation, developmental strides, and unwavering service to his people.

Oba Adetona’s passing came on a day of national grief, following closely on the heels of the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, his longtime friend and ally.

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, in a statement, described the monarch as “a symbol of unity, wisdom, and development.” He noted that under Oba Adetona’s reign, Ijebuland experienced “unparalleled cultural renaissance, infrastructural growth, and economic advancement.”

Widely credited for transforming the annual Ojude Oba festival into a globally recognised celebration of Ijebu heritage, the monarch also championed causes in education, healthcare, and youth empowerment.

Governor Abiodun said: “We honour his remarkable contributions and pray that his soul finds eternal rest.”

Burial arrangements are expected to be announced by the royal family. The late monarch is survived by family members and a grateful kingdom that will remember him as a custodian of tradition and a bridge between generations.
