PANIC IN OWO AS EXPLOSION NEAR BANK SPARKS STAMPEDE

Owo, Ondo State – Residents of Owo in Ondo State were thrown into chaos on Saturday following a loud explosion near a commercial bank, causing traders, motorists, and passersby to flee in panic.

Eyewitnesses said the blast occurred close to the bustling banking district, forcing traders to abandon their stalls as smoke briefly rose from the scene. The incident sparked heightened fear in the community, particularly in light of recent warnings from the Department of State Services about possible coordinated attacks by suspected ISWAP operatives in Ondo and Kogi states.

However, the Ondo State Police Command later reassured the public that the explosion was not linked to terrorism. The Police Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, confirmed that the noise was caused by a high-powered firecracker.

According to Ayanlade, one Ayoola Daniel Ojumu has been arrested after allegedly admitting to buying the device from a nearby shop. Investigators are still searching for a second person believed to have detonated the explosive.

“The disturbance was caused by a firecracker purchased near the scene. We have arrested one suspect who has confessed to his involvement,” Ayanlade said, adding that the suspect would be prosecuted after investigations conclude.

The police urged parents to caution their children as the festive season approaches and called on residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities immediately.
