INEC FIXES FEBRUARY 21, 2026 FOR RIVERS ASSEMBLY BYE-ELECTIONS

The Independent National Electoral Commission has fixed February 21, 2026, for the conduct of bye-elections to fill two vacant seats in the Rivers State House of Assembly.

The elections will hold in Ahoada East II and Khana II state constituencies, following the resignation of a lawmaker and the death of another, which created the vacancies.

INEC took the decision at an extraordinary meeting held on Monday, where it also assessed its level of preparedness for the Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections scheduled for the same day.

The commission said it was acting in line with the provisions of Section 116 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which mandates it to organise bye-elections whenever vacancies occur in state legislatures. The Rivers State House of Assembly, through its Speaker, has officially communicated the development to the electoral body.

According to the timetable released by INEC, the notice of election will be published on January 22, 2026, while political parties are expected to conduct their primaries, including the resolution of disputes, between January 23 and January 27, 2026.

Public campaigns by parties and candidates will commence on February 8 and end on February 19, ahead of the polls scheduled for February 21, 2026.
