Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has clinched the 2026 University Duel title after a commanding victory over the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) in the competition’s final round.
The academic contest, which focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), began earlier in the year and featured top universities across Nigeria.
The event, organised by JustMedia Productions in partnership with the STEMAfrica Initiative, spanned several weeks, drawing participation from 16 institutions. Dozens of students and mentors engaged in rigorous quiz sessions designed to test intellectual depth, speed and analytical ability.
OAU secured its place in the final after edging out the University of Ibadan, while FUTA progressed by defeating the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
FUTA’s team, made up of students from engineering-related disciplines, had impressed observers with strong performances en route to the final. However, they were unable to withstand OAU’s dominance.
The OAU team, led by standout contestant Qauyum Alli, delivered consistent performances throughout the tournament. Alli had earlier gained attention for his exceptional display in the semi-final, where he posted one of the highest individual scores of the competition.

At the final showdown, OAU outclassed FUTA with a wide margin, sealing the championship and reinforcing its reputation as a powerhouse in academic contests.
