The 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, Kaduna, has called on military personnel and residents of barracks communities to strengthen hygiene practices to reduce the spread of communicable diseases.
The hospital’s Chief Medical Director, Brig.-Gen. Godwin Ogoh, made the call on Saturday during a Barracks Health Committee programme organised by the hospital in Kaduna.
The programme, with the theme, “Empowering the Barracks Community to Respond Positively to Health and Cleanliness,” focused on preventive healthcare, sanitation and healthy living.
Ogoh, who was represented by Brig.-Gen. D.C. Ibe, said maintaining clean homes and surroundings was essential to preventing diseases, including cholera, tuberculosis, pneumonia, respiratory tract infections and gastroenteritis.
He described the Nigerian Army Medical Corps as the “eye” of the Army on matters relating to health and cleanliness, stressing the need for medical personnel and residents to demonstrate good hygiene practices.

According to him, prevention remains a key component of healthcare and should be incorporated into the daily lives of members of the barracks community.
He urged residents to keep their homes and surroundings clean, practise proper personal hygiene and seek appropriate healthcare when necessary.
Also speaking, Dr Ayamkop Attah, who delivered a health talk at the event, encouraged residents to take personal responsibility for maintaining hygienic homes and communities.
Attah particularly urged parents to teach their children and wards the importance of cleanliness, personal hygiene and healthy living from an early age.
The programme also featured the presentation of awards to some barracks boys who were recognised for their commitment to maintaining cleanliness and good hygiene practices.
The event concluded with an appeal to residents to sustain the practices and make preventive healthcare and environmental cleanliness part of their everyday lives.
