The Federal Government has commenced preparations for the 67th Regular National Council on Health, with a focus on improving healthcare quality and ensuring fair access to health services across the country.
The council is scheduled to hold in Lafia, Nasarawa State, from Nov. 16 to Nov. 20, 2026, under the theme, “From Commitment to Results: Delivering Quality and Equitable Healthcare for All Nigerians.”
The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has inaugurated technical committees to coordinate preparations for the meeting.
Speaking during the inauguration, the Permanent Secretary, represented by the Director of Health Planning, Research and Statistics, Dr John Ovuoraye, described the council as an important platform for federal and state health authorities to discuss challenges, review policies and agree on practical solutions.
She urged members of the committees to carry out their responsibilities with commitment and professionalism, noting that their work would help shape the recommendations to be presented at the council.
She also called for close cooperation between the ministry and the Nasarawa State Local Organising Committee.
The Nasarawa Commissioner for Health, Dr Shekwonugaza Gwamna, represented by Dr Ibrahim Adamu Hassan, assured the ministry that the state was ready to support the preparations and host a successful meeting.
The meeting also reviewed the roles of the various committees, the council’s logo, preparation of memoranda and deadlines for submissions by states.
While officials of the Federal Ministry attended physically, members of the Nasarawa Local Organising Committee participated virtually.
The council is expected to bring together key stakeholders from the federal and state health sectors to discuss major issues affecting healthcare delivery and agree on measures to improve health outcomes nationwide.
