The leadership crisis in the Ondo State House of Assembly deepened on Monday as lawmakers suspended plenary indefinitely and renewed calls for Speaker Olamide Oladiji to vacate office.

The lawmakers, who accused the Speaker of losing the confidence of the majority, vowed to commence impeachment proceedings should he refuse to resign.

Speaking on behalf of the Assembly, spokesman Olatunji Fabiyi said members had resolved not to reconvene until the leadership issue was addressed.

The crisis stems from allegations that the Speaker unilaterally altered the 2025 budget of the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC), valued at about ₦9.2 billion, without the approval of the House.

According to Fabiyi, no fewer than 21 of the Assembly’s 26 members have endorsed moves to remove the Speaker from office.

He said discussions on a possible resolution of the impasse were yet to yield results, adding that the House had not fixed a date for the resumption of plenary.

Fabiyi also disclosed that security agencies had been notified over an alleged assassination plot involving one of the lawmakers.

He maintained that the Assembly’s position remained unchanged, insisting that the Speaker should step aside or face impeachment.
