The West African Examinations Council has advised candidates whose 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination results were withheld over alleged examination malpractice to remain calm and follow the council’s official procedures.
WAEC withheld the results of 167,486 candidates who sat the 2026 Computer-Based WASSCE for School Candidates, representing 8.59 per cent of all candidates who wrote the examination.
The council explained that a withheld result does not mean it has been cancelled. Instead, it indicates that the case is under investigation and will be reviewed by the Nigeria Examinations Committee before a final decision is made.
Affected candidates should contact their school principals or examination officers for guidance, as schools receive official communication from WAEC on such cases.
Candidates are also encouraged to check the official WAEC Notice of Examinations Malpractice portal to confirm the reason for the withheld result, where available, and submit a representation for consideration.
WAEC advised candidates to monitor the portal for updates and rely only on information from its official website, verified social media platforms, and state offices.
The examination body warned candidates to avoid agents or individuals claiming they can secure the release or upgrade of withheld results, describing such claims as fraudulent.
According to WAEC, investigations may take several weeks or months, depending on the circumstances of each case. Candidates cleared of wrongdoing will have their results released, while those found guilty of examination malpractice may have the affected subjects or their entire results cancelled.
The council added that candidates awaiting the outcome of investigations may still apply to tertiary institutions with awaiting-result status, where applicable.
WAEC also noted that the results of candidates sponsored by state governments owing the council may remain unreleased until the outstanding payments are settled.
It urged candidates and parents to ignore unverified messages circulating on social media and obtain updates only through official WAEC channels.
