NAF Marks 61st Anniversary with Bold Foray into AI, Space Tech

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) on Monday, May 19, 2025, took a bold leap into the future with the launch of a groundbreaking collaboration in artificial intelligence and space technology. The move came during an international colloquium held in partnership with the UK-based Bradford-Redunchintala Centre for Space Artificial Intelligence as part of events to mark the Force’s 61st anniversary.

Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, described the colloquium as a strategic milestone, aligning with his vision to reposition the NAF into “an agile and resilient force that effectively meets the airpower demands of national security in all operational environments.”

In his keynote address, the CAS declared, “The Colloquium is more than a ceremonial event. It is the foundation of a strategic partnership to harness the power of space science and artificial intelligence for the enhancement of our national development and security.”

Welcoming guests to the event, Chief of Communications and Information Systems (CCIS), Air Vice Marshal Suleiman Usman, underscored the importance of sustained collaborations with strategic partners. According to him, “This event further underscores CAS’s strategic intent to develop and sustain optimal operational effectiveness in the NAF by continually collaborating with relevant strategic partners that will contribute significantly to the collective pursuit of harnessing cutting-edge technologies to address Nigeria’s pressing security challenges.”

The high-powered colloquium drew participants from Nigeria’s defence, academic, and tech communities, as well as international experts from the United Kingdom. The sessions spotlighted the transformative potential of data-driven systems and real-time space capabilities in modern warfare, intelligence, and economic stability.

A key moment at the event was the formal signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the NAF and the Bradford-Redunchintala Centre, cementing a joint commitment to research, training, and innovation in AI-driven space solutions.

With this move, the Nigerian Air Force has taken a definitive step toward asserting technological leadership in aerospace operations—blazing a trail toward a future where national defence is powered by cutting-edge science and innovation.
