FG Pledges Swift Relief, N2bn Support as Shettima Visits Flood-Ravaged Mokwa

Vice President Kashim Shettima on Wednesday assured residents of Mokwa, Niger State, of the Federal Government’s commitment to rebuilding their community following the devastating flood that left many displaced and infrastructure damaged.

Speaking during a visit to the affected area on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Shettima said the Federal Government would not abandon the people in their time of distress. He announced the release of N2 billion in relief funds and 20 trucks of grains to support the victims.

“This tragedy is not just a local loss—it’s a national sorrow,” Shettima said, addressing a gathering of traditional rulers, community members, and state officials. “President Tinubu has directed immediate intervention and long-term solutions to ensure this does not happen again.”

The Vice President arrived in Mokwa around 12:30 p.m. and was received by the Deputy Governor of Niger State, Yakubu Garba; the Etsu Nupe and Chairman of the State Council of Traditional Rulers, HRH Yahaya Abubakar; and members of the Niger State Executive Council.

Shettima stated that, beyond the emergency response, the Federal Government is committed to addressing the ecological and infrastructural challenges that contributed to the disaster. “We are not only providing relief but laying a foundation for resilience,” he said.

In his remarks, Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba, who represented Governor Umar Bago, thanked the Federal Government for the timely intervention and described the Vice President’s visit as “a morale boost in a time of mourning.”

Also speaking, the Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Usman Gawu, noted that the presence of the Vice President had rekindled hope among the grieving residents. He applauded the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for its prompt action in delivering food and relief materials.

Murtala Bagana, Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Duties, described the flooding as “a national tragedy” and lauded the Federal Government for its swift response.

The Etsu Nupe, HRH Yahaya Abubakar, thanked Vice President Shettima for visiting in person and praised President Tinubu for his quick directive to mobilize federal resources to Mokwa.

The Vice President’s visit marks one of the highest-level responses yet to the flooding crisis, signaling the Federal Government’s intent to prioritize disaster management and community rebuilding in the months ahead.
