The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs has refuted claims that Nigeria’s embassy in Tehran has shut down or deserted its nationals amid escalating tensions in Iran.
Reacting to reports circulating on social media, the ministry through its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, clarified that the embassy remains operational, albeit with adjustments to its physical presence due to security concerns following persistent bombings in Tehran.
Ebienfa explained that embassy staff are currently working remotely and maintaining active communication with Nigerian citizens in Iran. He added that arrangements are being made with Armenian authorities to facilitate possible evacuations through Yerevan.
In a statement made available to journalists on Saturday, the ministry listed emergency contacts and email addresses through which stranded Nigerians can seek help. It also encouraged citizens to connect with designated community coordinators in key areas and to join a Nigerian group on the Iranian messaging app “eitaa” for timely updates.
While acknowledging the disruption to regular operations, the ministry assured that no Nigerian in Iran has been left unattended, reaffirming its commitment to the safety and welfare of citizens abroad.
