FG Pushes Phytomedicine for Economic, Health Boost

The Federal Government has launched a strategic initiative to unlock the economic and therapeutic potential of Nigeria’s rich biodiversity through the development of the phytomedicine value chain.

Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, inaugurated a ministerial committee to drive the initiative. He emphasized that Nigeria’s medicinal plants have yet to be fully harnessed for economic and healthcare benefits.
The Phytomedicine Value Chain Initiative aims to integrate traditional medicine into formal economic and healthcare structures, supporting goals like Universal Health Coverage and job creation.
Salako mentioned that commercializing Nigeria’s phytomedicine sector will generate employment in areas such as plant conservation, cultivation, and production of herbal medicinal products.
