The Plateau State Government has confirmed 11 cases of Lassa fever and four related deaths following an outbreak that has affected seven local government areas since December 2025.
The Commissioner for Health, Nicholas Baamlong, made this known on Saturday during a press briefing at the Ministry of Health in Jos, where he provided updates on the situation and the measures taken to contain the disease.
Mr Baamlong said the state was first notified on 20 December, 2025, after a case was reported in Quanpan Local Government Area, prompting the immediate activation of the incident management team.
He said two cases were initially confirmed, leading to intensified contact tracing and surveillance.
According to him, 28 suspected cases have been recorded so far, out of which six were confirmed at an earlier stage.
“At that time, we traced about 69 contacts, from which we recorded 16 suspected cases, and five were confirmed positive. This brings the total number of confirmed cases in Plateau State to 11 from December till now,” he said.
The commissioner added that four fatalities have been recorded in key health facilities across the state, including the Jos University Teaching Hospital, Plateau Specialist Hospital, and Bingham University Teaching Hospital.
“One of the deaths is a medical practitioner who attended to an infected patient. As of today, another doctor is also on admission and receiving treatment,” he said.

Mr Baamlong further disclosed that 109 contacts are currently under follow-up as authorities strengthen surveillance, case management, and other response interventions aimed at curbing further spread of the virus.
