NELFUND: HOUSE OF REPS HOLDS SOUTHWEST ZONAL SENSITISATION ON STUDENT LOAN SCHEME IN AKURE

The House of Representatives Committee on Student Loans, Scholarships and Higher Education Financing is set to convene a South West zonal sensitisation programme aimed at boosting public awareness of the Federal Government’s Student Loan Scheme and related education funding interventions.

The one-day engagement is scheduled for Thursday, May 21, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. and will take place at the T.I. Francis Auditorium, Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Ondo State.

Speaking in Akure ahead of the event, the programme consultant, Dr. Ayodeji Ologun, said the session is designed to bring together key stakeholders in the education sector, including heads of tertiary institutions, students, education administrators, and policymakers across the South West.

He explained that discussions will focus on the implementation, accessibility, and overall impact of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) as well as other related government education support schemes.

The Vice Chancellor of FUTA, Prof. Adenike Temidayo Oladiji, is expected to serve as Chief Host, while Hon. Ifeoluwa Ehindero, who represents Akoko North East/Akoko North West Federal Constituency and chairs the House Committee on Student Loans, Scholarships and Higher Education Financing, will attend as Special Guest alongside other committee members and officials of NELFUND from Abuja.

Dr. Ologun noted that the engagement is part of the National Assembly’s oversight and public interface responsibilities, aimed at tracking awareness levels of the student loan initiative, reviewing compliance with NELFUND guidelines, and strengthening public trust in the programme.

He added that the forum will also provide room for institutions and stakeholders to share experiences, raise concerns, and offer recommendations to improve the effectiveness of the scheme and broader education financing frameworks.

Invited institutions include FUTA, Federal College of Agriculture Akure, Rufus Giwa Polytechnic Owo, Federal Polytechnic Ile-Oluji, Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Adekunle Ajasin University, and Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, among others.

He stressed that the initiative underscores the commitment of the National Assembly to ensuring that financial constraints do not deny qualified Nigerians access to higher education.

Stakeholders, he added, are encouraged to participate actively in the engagement aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s education system.
