President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has renamed the completed Institute of Petroleum Studies in Kaduna as the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology.
Tinubu announced the decision on Friday during his Democracy Day address, saying the move was in honour of the late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua’s contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development.
The President described Yar’Adua as one of the key figures in the country’s democratic journey, noting that his vision and commitment to national unity helped shape modern democratic Nigeria.
“Among the architects of modern democratic Nigeria, we honour General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua for his vision of national partnership,” Tinubu said.
He added: “In recognition of his contributions, the Federal Government has approved the revitalisation and renaming of the completed Institute of Petroleum Studies, Kaduna, as the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology.”
Tinubu also announced national honours for more than 30 pro-democracy activists and soldier-democrats linked to the June 12 struggle.
The list includes posthumous awards for Dr Arthur Nwankwo and Ben Charles-Obi.
According to the President, the full list of recipients of the national honours will be made public in the coming days.
