ONDO WITHHOLDS WASSCE RESULTS OF 17 STUDENTS OVER VIRAL SIGN-OUT VIDEO

The Ondo State Government has withheld the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results and official testimonials of 17 students involved in a viral sign-out video that sparked public outrage on social media.

The affected students are from Oyemekun Grammar School, Aquinas College and CAC Grammar School.

The Commissioner for Education, Igbekele Ajibefun, announced the sanctions after an emergency meeting with officials of the Ministry of Education and administrators of the affected schools in Akure.

According to the government, the students were identified in a video recorded shortly after the completion of the 2026 WASSCE, where some of them allegedly engaged in unruly conduct, including tearing their school uniforms and chanting inappropriate slogans during end-of-examination celebrations.

As part of the disciplinary measures, the state government directed that the students’ WASSCE results and testimonials be withheld indefinitely. Their names will also be entered into a newly created “black book” for student misconduct in their respective schools.

The Ministry further ordered all secondary school principals in the state to establish similar disciplinary records, while senior officers in the affected schools were issued queries over alleged supervisory lapses that allowed the celebrations to degenerate into disorder.

Government also directed the immediate expulsion of any non-graduating student captured in the viral video.

Ajibefun said the state would not tolerate actions capable of eroding discipline and tarnishing the image of its educational institutions.

He said while students have the right to celebrate academic milestones, such celebrations must be conducted within acceptable standards of decency and discipline.

“We will not fold our arms and watch the discipline we have painstakingly instilled in our schools be eroded for the sake of social media clout,” the commissioner said.

The Permanent Secretary, Akindele Ige, urged principals to promptly report incidents capable of disrupting order to the appropriate authorities before they escalate.

The government also appealed to parents to guide their children against actions that could jeopardise their future, stressing that the sanctions were intended to serve as a deterrent to other students.

Parents of the affected students have been invited to the ministry to receive official notifications of the disciplinary actions.
