A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to activist and publisher, Omoyele Sowore, in the sum of N200 million.
Justice Mohammed Umar, who delivered the ruling on Tuesday, ordered the defendant to provide two sureties in like sum as part of the bail conditions.
The court directed that one of the sureties must be a traditional ruler from Sowore’s community, while the second must own landed property in Abuja.
Justice Umar also ordered the defendant to surrender his international passport to the Deputy Registrar of the court.
The court had, on June 16, revoked Sowore’s earlier bail after he failed to appear for proceedings.
In his ruling, the judge held that the court was satisfied with Sowore’s willingness to face trial, noting that he voluntarily appeared before the court without waiting to be arrested.
Counsel to the defendant informed the court that Sowore’s passport is currently with the United States Embassy in Lagos and requested permission for him to retrieve the document before depositing it with the court as directed.
The defence also urged the court to release Sowore to enable him to meet the bail conditions.
The case was subsequently adjourned until July 6 for the commencement of trial.
