FG APPROVES MAJOR NYSC REFORMS AFTER 53 YEARS

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved a comprehensive reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), marking the most significant overhaul of the scheme since it was established 53 years ago.

The Federal Government said the reforms are designed to modernise the NYSC and make it more responsive to the country’s changing economic and social realities, while preserving its role in promoting national unity.

One of the key changes is the introduction of a technology-driven call-up process and a more security-conscious deployment system to improve the safety of corps members across the country.

The orientation camp programme will also be revamped, with greater emphasis on leadership development, entrepreneurship, digital skills, and specialised career training to better prepare graduates for the labour market.

Under the new arrangement, corps members will be posted to primary assignments that align more closely with their academic qualifications and career interests, allowing them to gain relevant work experience during the service year.

The Council also approved a new governance structure that places the operational management of the scheme under civilian leadership, while the military will continue to provide security support during orientation camps.

To improve standards across the country, NYSC camps will now be assessed under a national grading and certification system.

In another major change, the traditional Passing Out Parade will be replaced with a graduation ceremony, while corps members will receive a redesigned uniform intended to reflect professionalism and national pride.

The government said the reform process began in 2025 after extensive consultations involving the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, the Federal Ministry of Education, and the Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination.

To give legal backing to the reforms, FEC directed the Attorney-General of the Federation, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, to begin the process of amending the NYSC Act and other relevant regulations.
