LAW SCHOOL DG WARNS AGAINST INTERNAL RESISTANCE, PUSHES REFORM AGENDA

The Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, Olugbemisola Odusote, has raised concerns over what she described as persistent interference from within the legal profession, warning that such resistance could hinder ongoing efforts to strengthen discipline in the Bar.

She said enforcing professional discipline often faces pushback from practitioners, noting that some lawyers expect exemptions from established rules.

Odusote made the remarks on Saturday during a reception held in her honour at Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos, where she also presented her reform agenda for the institution.

According to her, the Law School is set to prioritise institutional reforms, including infrastructure upgrades and wider adoption of digital systems to modernise legal training and assessment processes. She referenced the global shift towards computer-based examinations as a model Nigeria must increasingly embrace.

She added that implementing the proposed changes would require substantial financial commitment and collaboration from stakeholders across the legal sector, stressing that government resources alone would not be sufficient to meet the institution’s needs.

The DG also expressed appreciation for the support she has received since her appointment, describing it as the outcome of mentorship, professional dedication, and collective goodwill within the legal community.

The event drew senior members of the judiciary, legal practitioners, academics, and political figures, who used the occasion to urge her to maintain discipline and pursue reforms in legal education.

Speakers at the gathering described her appointment as a milestone, noting her emergence as the first female head of the Nigerian Law School since its establishment in 1962.

They also called for stronger collaboration between universities and the Law School to improve the quality of legal training and ensure higher professional standards for entrants into the profession.
