PRIMARY HEALTH CENTRES GET SOLAR POWER BOOST ACROSS 17 STATES

Reliable electricity remains a critical but often neglected pillar of an effective primary healthcare system, with far-reaching implications for service delivery, vaccine storage, and laboratory operations across Nigeria’s health facilities.

To address this gap, key health stakeholders have advanced the solarization of Primary Healthcare Centres nationwide as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the health system.

Yesterday, eHealth Africa, in collaboration with the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, UNICEF, and other partners, officially handed over 371 solar-powered Primary Healthcare Centres spread across 17 states to the Federal Government.

Under the arrangement, eHealth Africa provided solar energy systems to 238 of the facilities, aimed at ensuring uninterrupted and clean power supply for essential healthcare services.

The intervention aligns with the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative led by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, and is designed to improve primary healthcare infrastructure nationwide.

According to stakeholders, the solarization project is expected to strengthen vaccine cold chain systems, enhance immunisation coverage, improve service delivery in underserved communities, and reduce reliance on diesel generators, thereby cutting operational costs and emissions.

The initiative is also being projected as a step towards building climate-resilient health facilities, with solar power now supporting critical medical equipment, facility lighting, and vaccine preservation systems in several rural and hard-to-reach areas.

Health partners say the intervention underscores the growing recognition of renewable energy as a key driver of sustainable healthcare delivery in Nigeria, particularly at the primary care level.
