The Department of State Services (DSS) has begun offering free medical treatment to a Sokoto-based businessman who was mistakenly shot by its operatives during a botched operation in 2016.
The victim, who recently arrived at the DSS hospital in Abuja, has since been admitted into a VIP ward, where he is undergoing comprehensive medical care at no cost, according to a statement from the service.
The DSS also confirmed that the businessman received a total of N20 million in compensation — N10 million awarded by a court in 2018 and an additional N10 million approved as a goodwill gesture by the current Director-General, Mr. Tosin Ajayi, in March.
“The DG directed that he be fully integrated into our medical system and enjoy lifelong treatment free of charge. He is currently in a fully equipped ward, and his meals are being provided without cost,” the statement read.
The shooting incident occurred during a pre-dawn raid in Jos, Plateau State, when DSS operatives stormed the home of the victim, mistaking him for a suspected arms dealer with a similar name.
The statement noted that Mr. Ajayi is the third DG to serve since the incident, adding that his decision to settle the compensation and expand support for the victim reflects a humane and restorative approach to justice.
