NiDCOM Seeks Probe Into Death of Nigerian in Luxembourg Police Custody

Abuja, May 28, 2025 – The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has announced its intention to collaborate with the Nigerian Embassy in Belgium to demand a thorough investigation into the death of Daniel Eheri, a Nigerian national who died while in the custody of the Luxembourg Police, Grand-Ducale.

In an official statement released by NIDCOM’s Director of Media and Public Relations, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, the Commission’s Chairman, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, strongly condemned the circumstances surrounding Eheri’s death and extended condolences to the deceased’s family and the Nigerian community in Luxembourg.

Dabiri-Erewa emphasized that NIDCOM would engage with relevant stakeholders to ensure justice is served, pledging to work closely with the Nigerian Embassy to push for accountability.

The Nigerian community in Luxembourg had earlier submitted a petition to the Federal Government through NIDCOM, urging urgent investigation into what they described as an alleged extrajudicial killing of Daniel Eheri by the Luxembourg Police.

The petition, titled “Case of an Extrajudicial Killing of a Nigerian by the Police Authority of Luxembourg,” was signed by Mr. Sunday Adekolu, National Coordinator of the Nigerian Community in Luxembourg. It states that Eheri was arrested on February 10, 2025, while carrying foodstuffs and was found dead in police custody the following day. The petition raises serious concerns over the lack of transparency and official explanation from Luxembourg authorities regarding the cause of death.

Adekolu highlighted that Eheri was a law-abiding resident with an unblemished record in Luxembourg. He called on the Nigerian government to intervene to prevent further incidents of this nature and to demand transparency and justice in the case.

Efforts by Nigeria’s Ambassador to Belgium, Ambassador Obinna Chiedu Onowu—who also covers Luxembourg diplomatically—have so far been met with silence, despite two letters sent seeking clarification.

Adekolu appealed to NIDCOM for urgent assistance in clarifying the facts and to urge Luxembourg Police to conduct an autopsy on Eheri’s remains. He also requested that the authorities be sensitized on how to prevent similar incidents involving Nigerians in Luxembourg.

“We seek your urgent assistance to put the records straight, persuade the Luxembourg Police to conduct an autopsy, and sensitize them to prevent a recurrence of such inhumane acts against our people here in Luxembourg,” the petition reads.
