No fewer than 45 armed bandits have been killed in a joint operation carried out by tactical operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and personnel of the Nigerian Military in Kuchi, a town in Munya Local Government Area of Niger State.
The stealth offensive, described by security sources as a precision strike, reportedly foiled a planned large-scale attack led by notorious bandit kingpin, Dogo Gide, and his loyalists.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the DSS disclosed that the bandits—numbering over 100—were tracked as they advanced from Zamfara and Kaduna States with the intent to launch coordinated assaults on several vulnerable communities within Niger State.
Acting on actionable intelligence, the DSS and military operatives laid an ambush on the outskirts of Kuchi, where a fierce gun duel ensued. At the end of the exchange, at least 45 bandits were neutralised, while several others were said to have fled with bullet wounds.
The security team reportedly recovered a cache of sophisticated arms and several motorcycles used by the assailants. However, the DSS confirmed that five of its operatives sustained serious injuries during the encounter and are currently receiving medical treatment.
According to the DSS, the raid is part of a broader covert campaign aimed at dismantling Dogo Gide’s network of terror across the North-Central region. This comes on the heels of a previous operation which claimed the lives of over 50 fighters linked to the same network.
The latest success, security analysts say, signals a growing momentum in the government’s effort to reclaim ungoverned spaces and restore stability in Niger State.
Residents of Munya LGA, who have endured repeated waves of banditry, expressed relief over the news, with community leaders calling for sustained military pressure and enhanced intelligence-sharing among security agencies to consolidate the gains.
