The Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, has received a Letter of Commendation from the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, for the Agency’s pivotal role in a recent national security operation targeting illicit pharmaceuticals.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday, the commendation came following NAFDAC’s outstanding contributions to a high-profile operation initiated by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA). The operation was prompted by credible intelligence indicating the presence of large consignments of Tramadol and other unregistered drugs at Nigerian ports.
The NSA had constituted a Multi-Agency Committee comprising officers from ONSA, the Nigeria Customs Service, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the Nigerian Army, and NAFDAC.
With NAFDAC personnel playing a critical role at the ports, the committee achieved several milestones, including:
Identification and tracking of containerized illicit drugs.
Evacuation and secure transport of over 200 containers of banned pharmaceuticals.
Supervised destruction of the substances at designated destruction sites.
Media engagement and public briefings to boost public confidence and transparency.
Mallam Ribadu lauded the professionalism, patriotism, and dedication of NAFDAC staff, emphasizing that their contribution helped avert grave health and security threats across the country.
“The Agency’s commitment to national duty is exemplary. Their role in this operation has significantly bolstered our collective fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking,” the NSA stated.
In her response, Prof. Adeyeye reaffirmed NAFDAC’s resolve to safeguard public health and maintain the integrity of Nigeria’s pharmaceutical supply chain.
NAFDAC reiterated its zero-tolerance stance toward illicit drugs and assured Nigerians of continued vigilance in collaboration with relevant security agencies.
