The National Assembly will hold a Special Joint Sitting on Thursday, June 12, 2025, as part of activities marking this year’s Democracy Day celebration.
An internal memo issued by the Clerk of the House of Representatives, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria, on Sunday, confirmed that the event will take place at the House of Representatives Chamber, National Assembly Complex, Abuja.
According to the circular, the proceedings are scheduled to commence by 11:00 a.m., while President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, is expected to arrive by 12:00 noon. The President will serve as the Special Guest of Honour and is expected to deliver a Presidential Address to the Joint Sitting.
Themed “26 Years of Democracy: Renewing Our Commitment to National Development,” this year’s commemoration underscores Nigeria’s journey through over two decades of uninterrupted democratic governance.
Highlights of the event include goodwill messages from former presiding officers of the National Assembly and the conferment of National Honours on select legislators by the President.
In a statement issued by the spokesman of the House of Representatives, Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr., the Joint Sitting is described as a “significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic evolution,” with emphasis on the pivotal role of the legislature in “safeguarding democratic values, fostering accountability, and promoting national development.”
The House also urged Nigerians to see Democracy Day as an opportunity for “reflection, patriotism, and renewed commitment to building a more inclusive, prosperous, and united nation.”
Democracy Day, now observed annually on June 12, was officially recognized in 2018 to honour the historic 1993 elections believed to be one of Nigeria’s freest and fairest polls.
